Banking recruitment can be attractive to graduates who want a structured selection process, but the exams are not all the same. IBPS runs common recruitment processes for participating institutions, while State Bank of India publishes its own recruitment notices. Officer roles and customer-service/clerical roles also differ in duties and selection stages.
This guide is a comparison, not a live vacancy list. For any current opening, use the official notification to confirm the eligibility, exam pattern, fee, dates, local-language requirements and selection stages.
Know the main exam names
| Recruitment | Broad role | What to verify in the notice |
|---|---|---|
| IBPS PO/MT | Probationary Officer / Management Trainee recruitment for participating banks | Participating banks, qualification, age cut-off, exam stages, interview and preference/allocation rules |
| IBPS CSA | Customer Service Associate recruitment, commonly described as a clerical route | State/UT vacancies, local-language conditions, exam stages and the rules for allocation |
| SBI PO | Probationary Officer recruitment by SBI | Current selection stages, eligibility, service conditions and the detailed advertisement |
| SBI Junior Associate | Customer-facing associate role in SBI | State/UT choice, local language, qualification, exam pattern and any specified language test |
Names, abbreviations and recruitment rules can change. For example, IBPS has used the title Customer Service Associate (CSA) for its clerical recruitment process. Do not assume that an older “clerk” guide reflects the newest terminology or rules.
Official portals to bookmark
- IBPS official website for current CRP notifications, corrigenda, vacancies and application links.
- SBI Careers for current openings, notices, results and recruitment archives.
Start on the main official site, open the relevant recruitment page and download the full notification. If an application link redirects to a registration portal, check that the link was reached from the official recruitment page. Never trust a search advertisement or a message claiming that payment to an agent will improve your selection chances.
What preparation usually involves
Banking exams commonly reward both accuracy and speed. Depending on the particular recruitment and stage, candidates may need to work on quantitative aptitude, reasoning, English, general or banking awareness, computer-related topics and timed mock tests. The exact sections, duration, negative marking and qualifying rules must be checked in the current notice.
Start with arithmetic basics, percentages, ratios, averages, profit and loss, time and work, and data interpretation if these appear in your target syllabus. For reasoning, practise puzzles, seating arrangements, syllogisms and other listed topics. For English, work on comprehension and grammar rather than memorising isolated word lists only. For awareness, revise current developments and basic banking concepts using a manageable source.
Use a mock test as a diagnostic tool
Do not treat every mock score as a prediction of the final result. A mock test is useful because it shows where time disappears. After each test, separate mistakes into four groups: did not know the concept, knew it but calculated incorrectly, misread the question, or spent too long on a low-value question. Your next week’s study should respond to that pattern.
For example, if you answer most reasoning questions correctly but leave several unanswered, practise shorter timed sets and learn when to move on. If accuracy is poor in arithmetic, slow down and rebuild the method before increasing speed. A higher attempt count is not useful if careless errors rise with it.
PO or customer-service role: how to choose
Think about the type of responsibility you want, not just the exam’s reputation. Officer and customer-service roles can differ in day-to-day work, career progression, transfers, accountability and selection process. Read the official job information and service conditions. Speak with people who know the role if you can, but distinguish their personal experience from the formal recruitment rules.
If you are considering multiple banking exams, compare the actual syllabi and dates. Some preparation overlaps, but each notification may contain its own eligibility and state/post choices. Do not submit an application before checking that the location and language requirements suit you.
Before you apply
- Confirm qualification and age using the notification’s cut-off date.
- Check whether a local-language condition or test applies.
- Read the application, correction-window and fee rules.
- Save the registration number, payment receipt and submitted form.
- Use the document checklist and our notification-reading guide.
