When people search for a government job, they often start with a list of exam names. A better first question is: which recruitment process actually fits my qualification, age, interests and available preparation time? Applying for an exam you are not eligible for wastes money and energy; preparing for five unrelated exams at once can leave you ready for none of them.
This guide gives you a practical way to shortlist options. It is a starting point, not an eligibility certificate. The latest recruitment notification always decides the exact qualification, age limit, category relaxation, cut-off date and selection process.
Common routes by qualification
| Your qualification | Routes worth checking | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Class 10 | Some SSC MTS posts, Railway Level 1/Group D recruitment and selected state-level support posts | Whether the specific post accepts Class 10, required subjects or trade certificates, physical/medical standards and age cut-off |
| Class 12 | SSC CHSL, some stenographer or state clerical recruitments, and eligible defence-entry routes such as NDA | Whether the notice requires a particular subject, typing/stenography, physical standards or a specific age window |
| Graduation | UPSC Civil Services, SSC CGL, many banking recruitments, graduate-level Railway posts and State Public Service Commission exams | Degree completion date, recognised qualification, age range, number of attempts where applicable and post-specific conditions |
| Professional or technical qualification | Technical Railway posts, engineering/medical/teaching recruitments and specialist vacancies | Required degree, discipline, registration, licence, experience or professional eligibility test |
This table is deliberately broad. A recruitment body may advertise several posts in one notification, and those posts can have different conditions. For example, one railway notice may contain roles with different technical, medical or physical requirements. Never assume that eligibility for one post means eligibility for every post in the same advertisement.
Choose by the work, not only by the name
Think about the job you would want to do after selection. Civil-services preparation is broad and usually requires long-term study across multiple subjects. SSC exams tend to reward repeated practice in areas such as quantitative aptitude, reasoning, English and general awareness, with the exact pattern set by the notice. Banking exams place substantial emphasis on speed, accuracy and timed problem-solving. Railway recruitment varies by post; technical roles may require a relevant qualification, while other roles have different stages and medical standards. Teaching eligibility is a separate route and does not automatically appoint a candidate to a teaching job.
A useful shortlist contains no more than two related exam families at first. For example, a graduate candidate might prepare for SSC CGL and a compatible banking exam if the overlap fits their strengths. Preparing simultaneously for UPSC, banking, railway technical posts and a teaching test usually creates too many different syllabi and practice needs.
A simple four-step shortlist
- Write your eligibility facts. Record your highest completed qualification, date of birth, degree subject, category certificates if applicable, typing or technical skills, and any physical or medical conditions relevant to the post.
- Find the official notice. Start with the recruiting body’s website. Use our notification-reading checklist to check the cut-off date and post-specific rules.
- Compare the syllabus with your current level. Download the official syllabus and one or two previous papers. Attempt a short diagnostic test before buying books or enrolling in a course.
- Check the practical cost. Include application fees, travel to exam centres, document preparation, internet access and the time you can realistically study around work or college.
Do not confuse an exam with a vacancy
An exam may be held regularly, but that does not mean every post is open every year or that every qualified candidate will be appointed. Vacancy numbers, locations, reservation rules and stages depend on the specific recruitment. State government jobs also have state-specific domicile, language or local requirements in some recruitments. Check the actual advertisement before making plans around a vacancy number shared on social media.
